Andre Stitt – Painting the New Town – 22nd January 2019

Born in Belfast Andre Stitt studied at Belfast School of Art from 1976-1980. He is now Professor of Performance and Interdisciplinary Art at Cardiff School of Art. He also teaches Fine Art and has been Programme Director of Time Based Practice. He has worked as. An experimental artist creating unique works at major galleries and sites specific world wide.His talk considers how phenomenological experiences of postwar New Towns and the work made by artists through residential placements have impacted upon his painting practice. He has developed an experimental approach to painting as a subjective interface between material and memory whereby a transformation of engagement with the New Town environment has occurred. The processes involved reveal via the act of painting the experiences of these New Towns with the resulting work of art embodying their documentation.

Andre Stitt ‘s reputation was originally founded on his international career as a performance artist although in recent years he has refocussed on the materials, processes and performance of painting.
