Dan Peterson , a graphic artist, went to Afghanistan in the winter of 2011-2012 as one of four war artists. He had spent many years in the Territorial Army and was sponsored in this war illustration enterprise by the First Queen’s Dragoon Guards otherwise known as The Welsh Cavalry. His interest was fired during the preparation of a dissertation on War Art and Perception subsequently obtaining a First Class Honours Degree in illustration at Cardiff School of Art and Design. In Helmand during the fighting life was often extremely stressful but Dan is modest about the courage required for an unarmed artist to be involved in military offensive against a complex enemy in an ancient country at war in the 21st Century. He feels strongly that the drawings produced under these circumstances give a unique insight into modern warfare with a very different perspective from a photograph. His drawings have made a substantial contribution to a book entitled ” Soldiers’ Flowers Artists in Afghanistan” with a forward by HRH The Prince of Wales.
