After training at Sheffield School of Art, Rowland Suddaby went to London and initially began working in films, preparing titles. He moved to rural Hertfordshire after a couple of years to concentrate on his painting. During this time he aquired some impressive patrons, including Hazel Guggenheim(sister of Peggy). During the war, Suddaby was involved in the Rcording Britain scheme, which saught to capture the traditional landscape and scenery of the countryside, which began to change suddenly due to the war and modern living.
