Born in Scotland, William Grant Murray trained at the Royal Institution in  Edinburgh, the Royal College of Art, London (where he won a number of prizes for drawing), and Académie Julian, Paris. He became Principal of Swansea School of Art and Crafts in 1909, retiring in 1943. He was the first curator of the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, which opened in 1911, and remained in post until his death in 1950. He was modest about his own works which consisted mostly of landscape paintings, but was well known for his efforts to bring modern Welsh art to wider audiences.
