Artist Notes:
This painting is filled with the characters of working miners – every one a personality carefully and insightfully observed. The humour and liveliness of working life in the coal industry is conveyed; an opposite view to the monumental and de-humanised dignity of labour as portrayed by Josef Herman and others. The ramp was at Oakdale Colliery, razed to the ground in the early 1990s. It led miners from the baths, where they arrived for work and changed, to the pit-head in the brick buildings behind.
