Artist Notes:
Rozanne Hawksley has lived and worked in Newport, Pembs for over 20 years. Her life and work are inextricably linked. Philip Hughes writes ,….recurrent themes are the fragility of the human condition and the immorality of war..she mistrusts the glib certainty of authority, and feels profound rage against loss and injustice. She questions Catholicism, yet retains a love of ritual., ‘The Queen of Spades’ is based on Pushkin’s short story – expected success turning into failure as the wining Ace turns into a Queen. The black lace glove holds 3 cards painted on vellum and more references to the story emerge the longer one looks.
