About CASW
Founded in 1937, the Contemporary Art Society for Wales (CASW) aims to promote engagement with the contemporary visual arts in Wales as well as support art and artists working in Wales.
Central to our support of contemporary art in Wales, we have always acquired a wide variety of artworks, which are distributed to galleries and other public institutions in Wales. Our distributed collection currently numbers over 950 works, which can be seen across Wales. In keeping with our commitment to making contemporary art accessible to all, our distributed collection can be viewed online (see ‘Artworks’) along with a range of artists’ and specialists’ talks on contemporary art (see ‘Artists’).
CASW supports contemporary visual art in a variety of ways. In addition to gifting works to galleries and public institutions in Wales, we also arrange:
Talks open to all given by artists and art specialists, both live and online
Awards CASW makes an annual Student Award to postgraduate students studying art in Wales, sponsors the CASW National Eisteddfod Prize (since 2014), supports the biennial Artes Mundi prize and, from 2024, supports artists at the beginning of their careers through the Hibbard Prize
Support for Wales’ participation in the Venice Biennale (including initiatives such as enabling young people to gain experience as curators)
Occasional exhibitions of work from its distributed collection, such as the exhibition to mark the 80th anniversary of CASW
Talks plus UK and International Study Tours for members: regular talks given by artists and art specialists to members plus visits to galleries and exhibitions in Wales and across the United Kingdom and international study tours to galleries and exhibitions and galleries in Europe, Russia and the USA
Publicity for artist members of CASW: promoting exhibitions given by individual artist members of the society.
