CASW Hibbard Prize

Following the very generous gift of Professor Bryan Hibbard, CASW has created a new prize for emerging and early career artists. The prize is named in memory of Professor Hibbard (1926-2021) and his wife Dr Elizabeth Hibbard (1928-2021), long-term supporters of the Contemporary Art Society for Wales, of which Bryan was President.

2026

Figurative artist, Gary Yeung, has been awarded CASW’s 2026 Hibbard Prize in conjunction with Newport Museum and Art Gallery. Gary captures urban scenes and natural landscapes through a variety of media, both in the studio and on location. He prefers working with ink and watercolour, reflecting his background in urban sketching initially in Hong Kong and more recently in Newport. Indeed, his work interpreting the complex architecture, intricate perspectives and challenging urban scenes of Hong Kong’s dense urban environment has significantly informed his work in Newport, where he has recently co-founded Urban Sketchers Newport, part of the global Urban Sketchers network.

2025

Sculptor Manon Awst has been awarded CASW’s 2025 Hibbard Prize. Contemporary sculptors, Ann Catrin Evans and Junko Mori, unanimously selected Manon Awst from a number of contenders. The prize, in its second year, is a commission for a site-specific sculpture at Plas Glyn-y-Weddw Arts Centre in Llanbedrog, north Wales, to be installed in early 2026. Manon’s work explores how materials transform locations and communities, focusing on the tension between human and non-human structures. Her interdisciplinary approach is informed by her academic studies in Architecture (University of Cambridge) and Artistic Research (Royal College of Art, London).

The inaugural award, selected by Andrew Renton in collaboration with Nantgarw China Works Museum, has been made to Toni de Jesus, Naomi Palmer and Sophie Jo Edwards, whose work is shown below.
