Notes: Sargeant was born in Abergele, but spent most of his youth in London. He trained in painting, mosaic, engraving and stage design. His first solo show was at the Edinburgh Festival in 1961. He lectured in television and graphic design at the University of Hull until he retired in 1984 owing to deterioration of his sight. He was registered blind in 1995, but continues to paint. His love of abstract urban and industrial forms is apparent in the deep colours, rectilinear forms and layered textures of this painting. His subject matter of this period can be compared with contemporary Kitchen Sink Realism. More recent works have been concerned with trees and woodland.
