Content: This rich, semi-abstract composition in a subtle, delicate palette contrasts with much of Williams' early bold, luminous flower paintings. These were often set within thick, solid borders, through which she explored the relationship between a living organism and a fixed frame. Vivienne Williams is a serious student of Tibetan Buddhism, which often imbues her work, as here, with a sense of spirituality. Vessel is the third of a series of four where a single pot is the only object. Ceramic containers can have spiritual connotations in Buddhism and there is certainly something contemplative about this work in its elegance of form, subtlety of colour and calming affect. It is a painting with a spiritual feel reflecting the importance of stillness in religious experience.
