Notes: Rozanne Hawksley lived and worked in Newport, Pembrokeshire for over 20 years, and her life and work were inextricably linked. Philip Hughes wrote: '....recurrent themes are the fragility of the human condition and the immorality of war...she mistrusts the glib certainty of authority, and feels profound rage against loss and injustice. She questions Catholicism, yet retains a love of ritual.' The Queen of Spades is based on Pushkin's short story - expected success turning into failure as the wining Ace turns into a Queen. The black lace glove holds 3 cards painted on vellum, and more references to the story emerge the longer one looks.
