Davies made this work as an act of homage by a teacher to a pupil, and in celebration of Caradoc Jones' mountaineering achievement as the first Welshman to climb Everest, on 23rd May 1995. Jones supplied Davies with various items of climbing equipment and fragments of rock from mountains he had climbed for the work. The stone dust is from Hendre Quarry; Jones grew up nearby. The work was designed to resemble a sheer rock face in recognition of Jones' climbing expertise.
