In 1994, all three prizes in the BP Portrait Award in the National Portrait Gallery went to Welsh painters. This was the painting that took third prize. Thoughtful composition and skilful execution lead one to see a man of determined attitude eating fish and chips, who one then notices is sitting in a wheelchair and is presumably physically disabled. This is a pertinent reminder to see the person, not the disability, and a fine example of how to make a portrait more than just a likeness.
