Notes: Janeček was a major Czechoslovakian modern artist who was not only a painter and printmaker, but also a sculptor, graphic artist, and maker of tapestries and mosaics. He was the recipient of the first International Medal awarded by the Contemporary Art Society for Wales, to coincide with his major retrospective in Cardiff in 1984. In the course of his life his work developed through all the major twentieth-century movements whilst retaining lyrical simplicity inspired by his love of folk art. This deceptively simple linocut is a fine example.
