Content: Charles Burton became well-known in the 1950s as a leading member of the Rhondda Group and won the Gold Medal of the National Eisteddfod at the age of 25. Early works were purchased for CASW and the Arts Council, but this is the first of his more recent works to be purchased, one of a long series of still-lifes on a grand scale which express his enjoyment of loved objects and spaces. In its thickly applied pigment and geometrical composition it shows his sophisticated painterly sensibility. Burton has had solo exhibitions recently at both Brecknock Museum and the Martin Tinney Gallery.
