This is a companion work to After the Blast (CASW 664), and shows the same colliers inserting the high timber supports of a main roadway. The low pit props on either side and the dry stone work support the top of the coal seam which has been removed. Taller timbers are required to support the high roof of the roadway, like the nave of a cathedral running between aisles.
