Notes: Janes studied at Swansea College of Art and the Royal Academy Schools in London. He was a friend of poet Dylan Thomas, sharing flats with Thomas and the painter Mervyn Levy in London before returning to his home town of Swansea in 1936. He was a founder member of South Wales Group/Welsh Group. Salome was painted when was 27, and painting its intricate detail took him an entire year. In 1963 he moved to Dulwich to teach at Croyden School of Art. Janes continually experimented with subjects and styles, including incised still life oils, formal portraits, photo collages, perspex reliefs, and late-career shorescapes.
