Notes: Quentin Bell was the son of art critic Clive Bell and his wife the painter Vanessa (sister of Virginia Woolf), who was a member of the Bloomsbury Group of artists. Bell produced numerous paintings in oil, but is known mainly as an academic specialising in art history, and as an author of books about the Bloomsbury Group, and also his aunt Virginia. He lectured at University of Durham and held the post of Professor of Fine Art the Universities of Leeds, Oxford and Hull, and Professor of Art History and Theory at Sussex. In retirement, he worked as a potter.
