Notes: John Ward was born in Hereford, where he studied art before going on to the Royal College. He has become well-known as a Royal portrait painter, famously painting Diana, Princess of Wales in 1984 wearing the satin dress from her wedding. He also worked as an illustrator, notably making fashion sketches and interiors for Vogue, and illustrating Cider with Rosie by Laurie Lee in 1959. He became a Royal Academician in 1965, resigning in 1997 in connection with the Sensation exhibition, and was created a CBE in 1985.
