Notes: Lewis was the son of an MP (for Carmarthen) and inherited Stradey Castle and its 3000-acre estate. Educated at Eton and Oxford University, he was a keen painter, collector of art and friend of the social realist artist and critic Hubert Herkomer who, when adjudicating the Eisteddfod exhibition in 1895, lamented the state of the visual culture in Wales. Lewis established Llanelli School of Art in 1907 and worked to promote contemporary Welsh art, culminating in his chairmanship the 1930 Eisteddfod exhibition, which featured works by Gwen John, David Jones and Cedric Morris. An etcher and painter of landscapes and genre works of local workers, he exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1878 and 1882.
