This painting depicts the groupings of miners, union officials and mine managers leading up to a ballot of workers, presumably considering one of the strike calls of the 1970s. There is animation in the argument of the suited officials, but most of the miners appear to be reading or talking quietly. Spare sheaves from the winding gear lie in the background.
