Content: CASW acquired Koppel's Pier Head, Liverpool, 336 (i) which covered this painting for many years. The handshake may be a depiction of the meeting of American and Russian troops at the River Elbe in Germany in 1945 towards the end of World War 2, the title being an acknowledgement of their enmity during the Cold War that followed.
