Notes: Shani Rhys James is the most celebrated painter of her generation in Wales. She won the Gold Medal at the Eisteddfod in 1992 and the Jerwood Prize in 2003. She was awarded an MBE in 2006. Her works are thickly painted, impassioned and often of a confessional nature; the faces that appear in them are of the artist herself, or members of her immediate family. The Hand Mirrorprint in this portfolio shows the figure of a young girl searching for herself in a room of dressmakers' dummies. Shani Rhys James is represented by the Martin Tinney Gallery, Cardiff.
