Notes: Richard Cox has lived and worked in Cardiff since 1975, including as Visual Arts officer for the Arts Council of Wales 1994-8. His initial inspiration was from the post-war American Abstract painters, particularly Ad Reinhardt. To this he has added Japanese aesthetics, particularly taken from classical Japanese architecture, with reference to the quality of space, and silence. The contrasts between the unrestrained passages in his work, the hard architectural lines and blocks of solid colour, aim to achieve a balance and ultimate resolution.
