As well as winning second prize in the summer show at the Museum of Modern Art Wales, Machynlleth, in 1998, this painting was voted the most popular in the show. The purchase for the Society made up a well deserved treble for the painter, who has exhibited regularly in Wales since 1993. What appears to be a portrait of an old man of the sea becomes rather more knowing, as well as more poignant, when one realises that this is a self portrait, an image reversed, in the same way as the title.
