In a letter to selector Dr Chris Evans, Ford wrote '...When I painted Belonging it had nothing to do with mining or the communities of the recent past. It had nothing to do with notions of Welshness or Englishness. It was simply a painting about my home, my vicinity, my experience of the valley outside my house.The painting attempts to recall a moment when the roof tops became a great celestial mirror that cut through the midday haze of greeny brown grey, 5 minutes of magic in an otherwise unremarkable day.'
