Notes: After training at Sheffield School of Art, Rowland Suddaby went to London and initially began working in films, preparing titles. He moved to rural Hertfordshire after a couple of years to concentrate on his painting. During this time he aquired some impressive patrons, including Hazel Guggenheim, sister of Peggy. During World War 2, Suddaby was involved in the Recording Britain scheme, which sought to capture traditional aspects of a landscape that was undergoing rapid change due to the war and pressures of modern living.
