Notes: Painter and horticulturalist Sir Cedric Lockwood Morris, 9th Baronet, was born in Sketty, Swansea. From his late teens he travelled extensively, and lived and studied in Paris from 1920-1925 with his partner Alfred Lett-Haines. In 1937, they founded East Anglia School of Painting and Drawing; their students included Lucien Freud and Maggie Hambling. As Peter Wakelin outlined in Then + Now, 80 years of collecting contemporary art for Wales, in 1935 he sought to open the public's eyes to the possibilities of art from Wales by co-organising The Contemporary Welsh Art Exhibition. The event attracted thousands of visitors in three venues and raised expectations of further initiatives. It led on directly to the creation of the Contemporary Art Society for Wales in April 1937.
